pretty practical

Pretty is pretty, but if it's not practical, its not worth junk. Remember that slipper chair I mentioned last time? Exhibit a. Let me introduce you to another rookie mistake: my little grey table. I snagged this at one of my favorite re-sale shops in Knoxville last year. Unlike the slipper chair, I don't regret buying it. I love the color, I love the bamboo detail, and I love the character and history that shows in the wood. But in my little one bedroom apartment, I used it as my coffee table and that was my mistake. It was too small, too unstable, and still too small. (Did I mention it was too small?) It functioned fine for me alone, but when company came over, it just seemed so impractical.

Realizing that it was impractical doesn't mean that I ditched it. I'm a big believer in re-purposing. I had been dreaming of a specific Ikea hack for my coffee table for a couple years and wanted dearly to execute it, but simultaneously didn't want to get rid of my sweet grey table that had been my first piece of furniture purchased in Tennessee. So I shifted it to the side of the couch instead of the front, and my fondness of it has grown three-fold simply because of the increased practicality. It's really the perfect height over the arm of the couch and I love the way the depth and color compliment the same in the sofa.

Is there a piece in your home that you love, but it's just not working where it is? Try it in a new space and let us know how your practical re-purposing changes the way you view your piece!

quick fixes

#1

Move things around! Sometimes your space is just stale and needs variation. Figure out another way for the puzzle pieces to fit together.

#2

Bring in some greenery or fresh flowers. Guaranteed to bring a little more life to any space.

#3

Open up your blinds! Natural light restores a space like none other. Short supply of windows? Increase your own lighting with bright and effective lamps.
