On a warm summer weekend, I made a trip up to Oklahoma City to visit my friend Ann Marie. You can read my post on her living room and essential style here. Today I want to show you a couple of her key pieces that really defined the character and set the tone for the rest of her living space.

Can we start with this chair? Because I am in love with this chair. When I walked into her apartment for the first time this is where my eyes were drawn. It has a definitively unique silhouette, taking a classic wingback style to a new level that is both exaggerated and demure at the same time. I love the wide expanse of the back of the chair which makes it cozy and accommodating while the thin wooden trim and details along with the dainty legs balance the top to keep the piece light, as opposed to chunky and grounded. It is the perfect combination for the living space in this one bedroom apartment.

This chair was flea market find (a total score, in my opinion) which Ann Marie had reupholstered in this punchy blue fabric with a classic basket weave pattern. And just like her couch (see here) it has that wonderful button tufting detail on the back, giving the piece a lovely finishing touch.

A defining element of Ann Marie's apartment was her finishing touches. Where most twenty-somethings would skip over the finer finishing details (admittedly, myself included) she pushes through. To be more specific - she has curtains, yes, curtains! I've always classified drapes as a "grown up" thing, something used in more mature spaces. And maybe because all apartments come equipped with blinds or shades I've just not pursued them because they weren't an absolute necessity. But seeing how they contributed to her apartment sparked a fire in me and now I'm much more open to the idea.

These particular drapes of hers make my heart go pitter-patter. The bright and inviting colors, the natural theme, the almost water-color painted style, and above all the florals all make me swoon. I've always tended towards florals (see here) and these are no exception. I have searched high and low for these exact curtains which Ann Marie originally got from World Market a couple years ago, but have yet to stumble upon them. There are of course some lovely alternatives that I have my eye on such as these or these. I'm elbow deep in consideration about buying the set from Target.

Stay tuned for an upcoming post on my all-time favorite piece from Ann Marie's apartment. If you think it's been good so far, it's only going to get better! I am currently in the midst of DIY-ing this same piece for my own apartment and can't wait to share the finish product with you.

Move things around! Sometimes your space is just stale and needs variation. Figure out another way for the puzzle pieces to fit together.

#2

Bring in some greenery or fresh flowers. Guaranteed to bring a little more life to any space.

#3

Open up your blinds! Natural light restores a space like none other. Short supply of windows? Increase your own lighting with bright and effective lamps.
