cinco de mayo

Aside from our neighbors to the south, Texas might just take the cake when it comes to celebrating this color-explosion of a holiday. There's no better way to usher in those warm, salty summer months than with a eye-popping, margarita loaded Cinco de Mayo fiesta. The whole holiday just screams - summer is heeeerreee. And I say cheers to that!

This year I'm headed to a combo party - Cinco de Derby - Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby. It's either going to be creatively unique or ambiguously confusing - I'll let you now which as soon as I figure it out myself. But in case you're looking to throw your own Cinco de Mayo fiesta for you and some margarita-loving friends, I thought I'd share some clever party decor ideas that I've seen floating around these past couple weeks.

// your drink isn't the only thing that will be spiked //

Take a hint from this french blog on how to incorporate the ever-loved succulent and a couple of it's prickly friends into your cinco-de-cor, because succulents can do no wrong!

// in-crepe-able //

Go to town with your scissors and some tissue paper to make your own paper flowers. The cleverly named honestlywtf has a fool-proof tutorial on how to take your basic paper flower up a notch to create these multi-hued beauties. And it's so easy, you'll find yourself saying, honestlywtf.

// pico de gallo and papel picado //

A classic staple for the most authentic of Cinco de Mayo celebrations, paper picado is a tradition that just can't be beat. Use some of the intricate templates from style me pretty or hand the scissors over to a kid, niece, nephew, (whoever!) who can tap into their creative side to create a more whimsical, sentimental product.

// the one-of-a-kind calorie-free dip //

So ridiculously simple and easy that you're probably shaking your head wondering why you didn't think of it before Stephanie. Or at least that's what I thought to myself! Grab a couple bright paints and dip, dip, dip away to add some fiesta to your flatware. Dip, dry, repeat.

// cute is a universal language //

This one is a no brainer. It's free, it's cacti, do I even need to give a third reason? I'm not even throwing a party this year and I'm still making plans to string this up somewhere! Go get yours from seldeviking - you might not be able to read french, but we all know the word *free*!

// fringe benefits //

At this point, your party has reached Pinterest level of cute, so of course you'll want a photo backdrop for all your friends to snap and share. Brit+Co walks you through this basic bombshell that will no doubt inspire some of the best instagrams of the night.

// the only cactus that won't prick you //

Because these are painted rocks. Yes. Painted. Rocks. How simply clever is that? Again, a great way to incorporate any mini-me's and their eager helping hands into the decor process. Just hunt down a handful of nice flat stones and paint away! What a creative and affordable idea from Felt Magnet!

So go ahead and crab your craft basket and a pre-cinco margarita (you had to test out the recipe, right?!) and start prepping for your most festive party yet!
